DVD - Johnny Winter - Pieces & Bits

December 4, 2001

Out of all the white blues guitarists to crop up in the late '60s/early '70s, Johnny Winter remains one of the most respected, as his career remains in high gear up. His very first DVD release, 2001's Pieces & Bits, collects performances of the guitarist from throughout his career, with varying video quality (most of the clips were lifted from video copies, since the passage of time has made it near-impossible to track down the original masters). But, still, Winter's performances are consistently fiery and enjoyable, as he's joined by such special guests as the great Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Dr. John, and his brother Edgar Winter, among others. Interviews and videos from Winter's personal collection tie his story together very well, as performances of such chestnuts as Rick Derringer's "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo," "Mad Dog," "Mojo Boogie," and "Highway 61 Revisited" (recorded at Bob Dylan's 50th birthday bash at Madison Square Garden in '92) all prove to be standouts. The 78-minute-long video is a must have for fans of masterful blues/rock guitar.
