Big Walter Horton - Fine Cut

BIG WALTER HORTON
FINE CUT

Despite being an extremely influential blues harmonica player, Walter Horton released only a handful of album under his own name during his lifetime. The last of these, 1979's FINE CUTS, found the veteran harp man displaying all the facets of his sophisticated technique. On the straight blues cuts, his big, blowsy tone commands immediate attention, while his playing on such tunes as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Relaxin'" showcase his jazzy chops and knack for nimble, precise melodic runs.

DVD - The Jeff Healey Band - Live At Montreux,1999

DVD - THE JEFF HEALEY BAND
Live At Montreaux,1999

Live At Montreux was filmed on July 3, 1999 and features The Jeff Healey Band blazing through 10 songs from their 1988 debut See The Light, on up through their 1995 Cover To Cover album. The only album that was completely ignored, for some reason, was 1992's Feel This, which happens to be one of their best. Although the entire performance was outstanding, the show really ended with a bang with Healey's ripping take on the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" which led right into the whah-soaked intro to his tour-de-force "See The Light". Healey has a charming rapport with the audience and after breaking a string while performing some ungodly bends during "Roadhouse" he gets up and leads the crown in a sing-along of the verse "...and I got myself a beer!".He comes back out for an encore performance of the Willie Dixon classic "Hoochie Coochie Man" which completely shames any version that Eric Clapton has performed in the last 20 years. It certainly doesn't hurt matters that Healey has surrounded himself with other exceptional guitarists to round out his touring bands. Pat Rush joined him on guitar for this tour, and added some exceptional lead and slide guitar that was as instrumental to the performances as Healey's own guitar work.

Lonnie Mack - Strike Like Lightning

LONNIE MACK Strike Like Lightning

Co-produced by Stevie Ray Vaughn, this was Lonnie's ticket back to the show after a few years on the sidelines. To say it was an inspired date would be putting it mildly. With his batteries recharged, Mack was in peak form, playing and singing better than ever. A major highlight is an inspired duet between Stevie and Lonnie on "Wham (Double Whammy)," going toe to toe for several exciting choruses.

Eric Gales - Relentless

ERIC GALES
RELENTLESS

Eric Gales' 1991 Elektra debut appeared when he was 15 years old, since that time, he has been compared mercilessly to Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix remains a primary influence on Gales, but the guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter has now released a total of eight albums and, when taken as a whole, his body of work represents something beyond it. It's been said that Gales breaks no new ground as a guitarist. So what? How many musicians do? The fact that he can play as well as he does should be enough. Relentless employs the power trio format (with a backing vocalist). Its 13 originals utilize electric Chicago and modern Texas-style blues, psych, hard rock, and to a lesser degree, funk. As its title suggests, Relentless is comprised of intense music. There are no ballads. Drummer Aaron Haggerty replaces Jeremy Colson, but bassist Steve Evans and backing vocalist Jesse Bradman remain. The set begins in modern Chicago blues mode with the boasting "Bad Lawbreaker." Here, Gales has scaled back some of the busy-ness in his phrasing, preferring to let notes hang just a little bit longer for more sting. And they do, even in uptempo mode. This is also true in the strutting Texas boogie on "The Finest Club in Town." "Draggin' Me Down" is a dynamic hard rocker with blazing extended guitar soloing and interesting, textured production. "The Liar," with Gales' use of wah-wah and knotty phrasing, is one of the more compelling cuts here; it's a wonderfully crafted song with smoking fills and a tight, blazing solo. "If You Knew the Truth" is jaunty, funky blues, with some popping drum work from Haggerty. The album concludes with "Universal Peacepipe." Despite its corny title (he really needs to work on them all around), it's a well-crafted tune; everything is in balance with well-placed dynamics and instrumental lyricism that don't exclude gnarly fills and an overdriven guitar solo. Gales' fans will no doubt delight in Relentless; while it undoubtedly displays all his trademarks, it also reveals growth in both his writing and in his abilities a bandleader, all the while revealing one of the baddest guitar slingers around.

Rich Harper Blues Band - Bottled Up Blues

RICH HARPER BLUES BAND
Bottled Up Blues

"The Rich Harper Band are not only a polished band who plays the blues the way they should be played, they write great songs too! They do killer covers of "Mean Old World", and "All I Got Belongs To You", that would make those old school bluesman smile in their graves. Rich Harper has a great voice for singing blues ballads like "How Much I Want You" and "All I Got". On top of that he plays a great slide guitar. My favorite on here is "Life", where Harper sings along with his guitar notes. I love this one! So lets do the math. Good slide guitar, good singing, great songwriting, and a great backing band = A Winner!"
